Do you ever get tired of handing out tickets and thinking people will never learn? Starting at midnight on December 31, 2010, the State of Michigan offers eligible drivers an opportunity to take a Basic Driver Improvement Course. The points or information about the violation will not be transferred to their driving record or disclosed to insurance companies.

As an officer, how can you help?
Educate ticketed drivers about the program.

Once you issue a ticket, the MDOS determines eligibility and sends a letter to the ticketed driver. Drivers have a one-time opportunity to avoid new points on their license by successfully completing the Basic Driver Improvement Course.

But, they only have 60 days from the date of the letter from the Department of State to take and pass the Basic Driver Improvement Course.

One study showed that over 70% of the drivers who had participated in the driver safety training program had zero collisions and violations during a nine-year period.

Together, we can prevent injuries and save lives on Michigan’s roads.
